An Alternative to the New Year’s Resolution

firework - New Year resolution

I’ve never been a fan of resolutions – for me personally, they don’t work. Maybe it’s the over eagerness to make too many changes/too big of changes all at one time. I would always start out strong and then by about week three my resolutions would fizzle like they never even existed.

I don’t think I’m alone.

And starting something so enthusiastically only to quit on it can make you feel like crap.

I now set New Year Intentions.

Being Intentional = total life game changer

Setting intentions helps you be deliberate. Deliberate in who you are, what you do, and how you show up to life.

You start steering your own life as opposed to just letting life happen to you.

To be clear, setting intentions is not about trying to control things. It’s more of a way of being than necessarily doing. More flow, less force.

It’s about how you show up, the energy you bring to your life.

To clarify, goals and intentions are not the same thing.

  • Goals = action oriented
  • Intentions = being oriented

Both are needed for things to emerge but the action becomes a lot easier when you are really clear on your intentions around your goals and living the intention first and foremost.

So, what could this look like:

Let’s say you set the intention of creating a stronger relationship with your partner this year. Focus on what a stronger relationship would feel like for you. Maybe it’s better communication, or feeling seen, or having more fun. Once you know how it would feel, be intentional about being that person: speak more openly, listen to your partner, enjoy more lighthearted moments. Be that person that you want to feel like.

Or maybe you are hoping for a promotion at work. How do you intend to feel for that new job? Maybe you’ll feel empowered or be able to contribute more. Make it your intention to feel more empowered and contribute more now. Do things that make you feel empowered – speak up, offer suggestions, communicate your interest in the promotion upfront.

For me, I intend to create things and show up for my business from a place of deep service, love, fun, and humor. These are the feelings states I hope to evoke every day.

Once you’ve got your intention, check in with it every day. Are you aligned with how you intended to feel and what you wanted to create? If not, how can get you back into that feeling state? Maybe it’s a workout, or listening to your favorite music, or a hot cup of tea, or a long nap. Whatever it is, do something to care for yourself to get yourself back on track.

And then likely there will come a day in the not too distant future where you realize that your intention has become a part of who you are and you realize it wasn’t that difficult after all 🙂

Here are some questions to ask yourself around intentions:

  • How do I intend my life to feel this year?
  • How do I intend to show up to my work, my relationship, my kids, my workout, myself?
  • With my intentions in mind, how do I want to feel?
  • How can I feel that way right now?

I’m curious if you could set one intention for the year, what would it be?
